Palm Cove is changing. Not because our community decided it should — but because you weren't in the room when the decisions were made.
Time and again, decisions affecting our village have been made by people with no real connection to Palm Cove — who don't experience it, don't feel its rhythms, and clearly haven't engaged with the guidance that exists to protect it.
Our Council endorsed the 2021 Palm Cove Streetscape and Landscape Master Plan — $165,000 of ratepayers' money spent to establish a guiding vision for our village. It is widely acknowledged that the plan falls short of what Palm Cove truly needs, producing principles rather than the detailed overlays and development controls that should guide future decisions.
Palm Cove Alliance is actively advocating for that more complete document. But until it exists, the 2021 plan is the only formal guidance we have — and even that is being overridden, quietly, incrementally, and without meaningful local input.
This isn't a warning about what might happen. It's already happening.
And here is the uncomfortable truth:
If the community stays silent, the decisions don't stop — they just get made without you.
Hoping someone else will step up is completely understandable — but it's a hope that has costs, and our village is already paying them.
Even the most committed Councillor is still just one vote among ten. Their focus is necessarily on strategy and policy for the broader Cairns region, as required under the Local Government Act 2009 (Qld). Without a strong, organised community voice informing all of Council — not just one Division — the decisions that shape Palm Cove will always reflect someone else's priorities.
Palm Cove Alliance exists to change that. We bring coordinated advocacy, local knowledge, and a long-term vision to every engagement — from Council chambers to State Government and beyond. We don't just write letters — we build the documented, evidence-based case that deserves to be taken seriously. You can see our submissions, correspondence, and project priorities at palmcovealliance.org.au.
Whether you live here, work here, or simply love this place — your voice has a place in this conversation. Every person who knows and loves this village makes our collective voice stronger.
The lifestyle that makes Palm Cove special — the village character, the beach, the canopy, the amenity — none of it is guaranteed. It requires active guardianship.
So if you've ever said "they shouldn't have done that to Palm Cove" — now is the time to do something about it.
