Palm Cove did not become one of Australia's most admired tourism villages by accident.
Its Melaleuca and Palm canopies, Coral Sea and island vistas with its sunrises and moonrises, village scale, beachfront setting and relaxed tropical lifestyle are the product of landscape, community and decades of considered planning decisions.
Visitors come from across Australia and the world because Palm Cove offers something increasingly rare — a destination that has grown from its environment while remaining connected to it.
That character is not guaranteed.
As Tropical North Queensland continues to grow, Palm Cove has an opportunity to secure its future through strategic planning, investment and place-based decision making that protects the qualities that make it distinctive.
The challenge is not whether Palm Cove will change, but whether future change strengthens or weakens the experience that residents, businesses and visitors value most.

Strategic Priorities for Palm Cove
The following projects and planning initiatives have the potential to shape Palm Cove's future for decades to come.
Enhancing Pedestrian Safety and Environmental Quality
Why It Matters For Palm Cove
Palm Cove has long been one of Australia's most beautiful coastal villages — yet its signature street, Williams Esplanade, functions primarily as a through-traffic corridor and car park. The result is a beachfront that underperforms its extraordinary setting: pedestrians navigate around reversing vehicles, cyclists have no safe path, and the space between the village and the Coral Sea is dominated by vehicles.
FNQ Regional Plan 2026: An Advocacy Win
We submitted a comprehensive proposal to the Draft FNQ Regional Plan calling for formal recognition of Palm Cove as a strategic tourism destination. Strategy 1.11 — requiring new Northern Beaches development to protect tourism village performance — is a direct result of that advocacy, now embedded in the approved final FNQ Regional Plan. The next step is a Tourism Precinct overlay through the Cairns Regional Council Planning Scheme review.

Palm Cove — paradise for locals, a crown jewel for all of Cairns.
As one of the region's premier tourism destinations and a cherished Northern Beaches amenity enjoyed by the whole Cairns community, Palm Cove punches well above its weight for our regional economy. Keeping it special matters for everyone.
But we're at a crossroads. In the CRC community survey, 75% of Palm Cove residents identified parking as critical, and 68% supported traffic management changes. And bigger pressures are coming — the Destination 2045, Wangetti Trail, Cairns 2050, and Ocean's Edge Stage 2 will all add to the demand.
Palm Cove is more than just a beautiful beach – it's a legacy we all have a responsibility to protect and enhance.
