Palm Cove is the jewel of Far North Queensland – a unique coastal village where renowned architect Leigh Ratcliffe's original vision created our iconic esplanade streetscape with graceful architecture sited beneath towering Melaleucas. Since Ratcliffe's visionary work, no coordinated strategic advocacy has been undertaken to prepare this vital tourism asset for future growth while preserving and enhancing what makes it special. Our community hasn't had a strong, united voice to shape its future.
Why Palm Cove Alliance?
While various community groups have worked hard over the years to represent Palm Cove's interests, we now face unprecedented pressures that require sustained, strategic advocacy. Multiple major developments and regional growth strategies are converging on our village, creating both opportunities and challenges that need careful management.
Queensland's Destination 2045 Tourism Strategy identifies Far North Queensland as a priority growth region, targeting a doubling of the state's visitor economy to $44 billion annually. Palm Cove — as FNQ's most recognised luxury coastal destination — sits directly in the path of that growth. Combined with Cairns' expansion plans extending toward 2050 and increasing regional tourism investment, our village infrastructure and character face significant pressure.
It's the perfect time for our community to have a strong, united voice in shaping how these changes unfold.
What We're Advocating For
Immediate Priorities:
Activate the 2021 Master Plan – Council spent $165,000 on the Palm Cove Streetscape and Landscape Master Plan and extensive community consultation. We want Council to review and update the recommendations, secure funding, and implement the plan
Protect Our Character – Establish planning overlays to prevent inappropriate development and preserve our boutique tropical village feel
Fix Parking & Safety – Improve parking availability and traffic management ensuring our paths and streets are safe for pedestrians and cyclists
World-Class Eco-Tourism – As the starting point for the Wangetti Trail, Palm Cove deserves a world-class vision that delivers an iconic gateway experience for this internationally significant trail
